Uber steps into another area of expertise, Movement. The new Movement website will offer access to the company’s data regarding traffic in form of scores, in the regions it operates. Movement was created with an intention to help city planners and researchers that work towards improving urban mobility.
Uber has a lot of knowledge about how traffic moves within a given city, the idea is to use this knowledge by anonymizing the data so it is not focused on one person. Uber is going to start sharing data, the possible areas. Initially the data is only going to be available for organisations that apply for an early access, Uber, eventually wants to make the data available for public.
Uber says that, “Over the past six and a half years, we’ve learned a lot about the future of urban mobility and what it means for cities and the people who live in them. We’ve gotten consistent feedback from cities we partner with that access to our aggregated data will inform decisions about how to adapt existing infrastructure and invest in future solutions to make our cities more efficient. We hope Uber Movement can play a role in helping cities grow in a way that works for everyone”.
Uber is hoping to make it easier for people who have influence over a city’s transportation get a better picture of the traffic in order to make better decisions. Movement’s users will be able to specify their search for example time of day, day of week and etc.
Uber explained movements by explaining two different traffic situations in Washington DC because of metro rail disruptions.
The case study note that “The Metrorail outage on March 16th increased congestion citywide during the evening commute hours, with the worst effects seemingly concentrated along major thoroughfares out of DC into Northern Virginia and Prince George’s County. On the other hand, SafeTrack Surge #2 appeared to cause more localized congestion in the region served by the affected line. Together, both examples highlight the critical importance of Metrorail to the District’s and the metro region’s over transportation infrastructure. When rail transit was shut down, travel times increased dramatically across the district”.
Uber’s Movement is going to help strengthen the relationship between Uber and the municipal governments in cities where it operates. Which will be helpful for the ride-hailing app in the future. But for now the big picture looks like Movement is going to be good news for people in the urban cities.
