Project Walabot was born in July 2014 with the concept of developing a platform that makes powerful and expensive technology, accessible and cheap. Its main focus was advanced imaging capabilities that allow people to uncover things hidden in their surroundings. This typically included substances under solid objects like walls. In March 2015, the first prototype was launched with unforeseen capacities of sensing and motion detection. This was for both people and objects. Walabot was built as a 3D imaging sensor that allowed users to see things in the world around.
Why is Walabot Best?
Walabot is an innovative technology. It is useful for homeowners, electricians, plumbers, contractors, builders, technicians, DIYers and more. When skilled handymen hammer, drill or cut into a wall, they have the fear of accidentally slicing an electrical wire or bursting a water pipe. With Walabot, this risk is completely eliminated. The device when connected with the app creates 3D images giving you an exact idea of where you need to hit to fix things.
Walabot DIY is a radio frequency technology for advanced detection and in-wall imaging. The device detects pipes, studs, cables, wires, and even rodents inside drywall and concrete. It creates images that allow you to evaluate the type, depth, material, and position of an object behind a wall. The device delivered to customers includes a Type C OTG Cable, Micro USB OTG Cable, Gel-Pad, Protective film, and quick start guide.
Walabot offers three types of kits – developer, creator, and starter. These kits assist professionals in developing different kinds of apps using radio frequency and sensor technology. Each Walabot Maker Product has its own USP and can be used to develop apps accordingly.
The Walabot DIY looks inside concrete and drywall. You can find metal and plastic pipes, wires and studs. You can also adjust the sensitivity of the device on the basis of your construction. There are different sensing modes such as pan, images, and expert allowing you to see around 10 inches deep into the walls. If you are trying to detect the area of problem and later want to discuss the same with an experienced handyman, you can map all the areas and record a snapshot for offline analysis.
The Walabot device requires an Android app for operation. Android phones with an operating Android 5.0 and above can be used. The device is currently not compatible with iPhones or tablets. Users of Apple products will have to wait until the device can be used.
The Walabot DIY can currently only be purchased in the US, New Zealand, Europe, Australia, and Canada.
The tutorial section on the website helps you to understand how the device is to be used and the benefits of the different modes – pan, images, and expert. You can use the tutorials to get to know your walls.
Walabot was recognized as a Mind-Boggling Technology at CES. Live demos showcased how sensors could look through walls, identify leaks, track people, detect falls, and analyze breath. The Tech Crunch described it as “Useful in a number of scenarios”.
