Whatsapp Deletes Year Old Google Backups

One of the largest Instant Messaging application, Whatsapp has now confirmed its prior announcement for the Android users who have not even backed up their data and chats on the Google Drive for more than a year and will also lose their older backups.

The company which is owned by the Largest Social Media Network, Facebook, Whatsapp had reached an agreement with the Google this August to store the user content on the Google Drive cloud storage service without the help of a backup affecting the user Google Drive Storage Quota. This will also allow users to easily reload their data on different or new Android gadgets and smartphones.

Whatsapp has also warned that from today itself any of the backups that had not been updated in over a year will going to be automatically removed from the Google Drive Storage. Android users can easily update their copy and configure its update frequency as long as they have a personal account on Google.

Whatsapp announced that it has also selected around 20 research teams across the globe which also includes the experts from all over the world, who will work towards how the misinformation spreads and what additional steps the mobile messaging platform which could take to curb the fake news as well.

Shakuntala Banaji from London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Anushi Agrawal and Nihal Passanha from Bengaluru-based media and arts collective “Maria” and Ramnath Bhat from LSE have been selected for the paper titled “WhatsApp Vigilantes? WhatsApp messages and mob violence in India”.

The research examines the ways in which WhatsApp users understand and find solutions to the spate of “WhatsApp lynchings” that has killed over 30 people so far. This will also allow users to easily reload their data on different or new Android smartphones. Android users can update their copy and configure its update frequency as long as they have a personal account on Google. Earlier this year, WhatsApp's CEO and co-founder, Jan Koum, announced he was leaving Facebook.

The messages and media will take a substantial time to restore, depending on the amount of data the user had backed up. It is advised that the backup is completed using a Wi-Fi connection as the file downloads could incur heavy data charges if done over a cellular network.
