LinkedIn, the social network for working professionals with over 500 million members is taking it’s next step to get more users from the emerging markets. The company has released an Android app for LinkedIn Lite, a lighter and pared-down version of it’s original LinkedIn app. The app has been developed for markets where data networks are slower and relatively more expensive for users and phones are slower.
The app is now live in India and LinkedIn plans on expanding it to over 60 more markets in the coming weeks and months.
The company says that app only takes up 1 MB of space on a device, reducing data usage required to run the app by 80%, the app comes with quicker loading times, even on a 2G network. It features the basics of LinkedIn, like the news feed,jobs, profile, access to one’s network, messages, notification and search – minus the heavy graphics and other features which might slow down loading times and eat up user’s data balance.
LinkedIn Lite was first launched a mobile web site in September 2016, as part of a range of services specifically tailored for India, one of LinkedIn’s biggest emerging markets. India itself accounts for 42 million users.
Currently there are no plans to create an iOS app for LinkedIn Lite, which is quite obvious; Android long ago overtook iPhone when it comes to smartphones usage in emerging markets. For those who want to access LinkedIn Lite on their iPhone, they can do so through the mobile web.
LinkedIn’s foray into building a “lite” version of it’s website comes as other social networks have have found that the market is increasingly adopting their “lite” version, which in turn help the companies to churn in revenues.
