At the Xbox fan event of the X018, Microsoft has now announced the purchase of Fallout: New Vegas and South Park: The Stick Of Truth Studio Obsidian Entertainment. Apart from this, the company has also brought inXile Entertainment, creator of Torment: Tides of Numenera and Wasteland 2. The announcement follows the rumors of the Microsft having acquired of Obsidian first which is reported by the gaming blog Kotaku. After the acquisition, both the inXile and Obsidian will still be going to function independently with each other tasked with building a “new RPG experiences” for the Microsoft target experience.
“It was important for us to find studio partners who have strong creative visions, mastery of their medium and are expert world-builders,” Matt Booty, Corporate Vice President Microsoft Studios said in a statement.
“Obsidian and inXile embody all of these qualities while also bringing expertise on the PC platform and a unique RPG focus to the table. They will continue to operate autonomously with their unique talents, IP and expertise.
“As part of Microsoft Studios, Obsidian and inXile will have the support and freedom to fully realize their creative ambitions on both existing franchises and new RPG projects.”
At the press conference of the E3 2018, Microsoft has also announced that it has acquired four gaming studios. These studios are Undead Labs, Playground Games, Compulsion Games, and Ninja Theory. The acquisition of some of the studios such as the Playground games, which has also been making the Forza Gorizon series of the PX and Xbox exclusive games, and Undead Labs did not really come as a big surprise, but few could have also anticipated the acquisition of some of the other studios.
There is a fifth studio in the mix, which is known as the Initiative, which is based out of Santa Monica. These five studios are Microsoft way of re-affirming its commitment to the first party games, the lack of first-party titles have seen the Xbox one $1000 which is falling behind the pecking order among the consoles of this generation.
