According to App Annie’s 2018 report, by 2022, India will have 37.2 billion app downloads a year. In the last three years, almost all business sectors and countless companies made use of apps in a very innovative way, and media is at the forefront of the phenomenon. With different strategies and technologies, news providers buckling down to spread the news to the subscribers in no time. As a result, the news apps sector witnesses popping up of several startups and tough competition.

Lokal, an Indian based startup, brought a very innovative idea to the field: hyperlocal news in regional languages. Today, the startup has announced its acquisition of $3 Mn funding from a group of international capital ventures, including 3one4 Capital, Y Combinator, RB Investments, SOMA Capital. Many other non-Indian investors also participated in the round.

Focusing on two regional languages, Hindi and Telugu, Lokal offers local news in a total of 22 districts spread in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states. Now, the app is available in one district of North Indian state, Uttar Pradesh.

The fresh capital will be used to strengthen the potential of the product and to expand to more rural areas of India. Within one year of its launch, Lokal has over 1 million installs from Google’s play store. The recurring request from readers to expand to more areas clearly signifies the popularity of the app. The team aims to expand its presence in three more states over 2020.

Jani Pasha and Vipul Chaudhary founded Lokal in June 2018, and it is not only a platform for district-level jobs but provides jobs, classifieds, and matrimonial ads. Adding several other rural and local day-to-day information, it attracted millions of people.

“For a person using Lokal, he consumes about 120-150 content a day,” says Pasha.

Introducing app in vernacular is trending, and many are prioritizing regional languages over English in India. The simple interface of apps is convenient for everyone regardless of technical knowledge.
