Austin’s Everlywell To Launch COVID-19 Home Test Kit On 23rd March

Austin-based health care startup Everlywell has announced that it will launch SARS-CoV-2, a COVID-19 test kit for consumers to take at-home tests. SARS-CoV-2 will be available from 23rd March. 

According to Everlywell’s founder Julia Taylor Cheek, they will bring out the first lot of SARS-CoV-2 with 30,000 test kits that will be sold at $135 at ‘no profit for the startup’. The consumers can pay through health and flex savings accounts. After the first batch, it will scale its production to 250,000 test kits weekly.  

People who have a doubt or observe symptoms of Covid-19 can apply for test kits online from Everlywell’s website. The website will ask to fill the questionnaire as per the US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) guidelines.

The startup said that all the collaborated labs working with it for coronavirus testing are authorized by the Food and Drug Administration. The SARS-CoV-2 test kit includes all the supplies needed to collect samples at home. Then the test samples can safely ship to a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certified laboratory partners.

Once the samples are submitted to the labs, the results will be posted securely online within 48 hours, and whoever found COVID-19 positive would be suggested to take free telehealth consultations from independent board-certified physicians.

Everlywell’s scientific officer Frank Ong said, as the Covid-19 public health emergency is spreading like wildfire all over the US. SARS-CoV-2 kit for testing coronavirus is expanding its access in a responsible manner to supplement and reduce the overburdening on healthcare providers as the testing was available in limited clinical centers.

As of 19th March, the global count of COVID-19 positive patients was more than 236,000 including 11,274 patients from the US alone. On the other hand, the global death count of COVID-19 patients has touched the 9,790 mark with 157 deaths in the US alone. Presently, the New York City is massively affected by the outbreak of COVID-19.
