Walmart staffs now deliver the online orders to customer’s homes

The US supermarket giant Walmart is now planning to deliver online orders to customers on their way home from work shifts to compete with its rival Amazon. It is an “associate delivery program” for its ship-to-home orders.

Walmart is the world’s largest retailer with 4,700 US stores and roughly 1.2 million employees. The company would use these stores and employees for the “associate delivery” program to speed delivery and cut costs as well. The company has already begun testing the package –delivery program the previous month in three stores including two stores in New Jersey, and one in North West Arkansas. The company did not disclose when and where it would expand this program across the United States.

Walmart said that the employees could choose to participate in this program and they will be paid extra for this additional work. Walmart spokesman Ravi Jariwala said that the employees who want to participate in this program would be able to use an app to stipulate how many packages they want to deliver and also the weight and size limits on the packages as well. The company yet not disclosed the details about how employees would be paid but it would fulfill all the federal and state minimum wage as well as overtime laws.

The store staffs once have done working at the store for the day; they will take the packages from the backroom and load them into their vehicle. Then enter the delivery addresses into the GPS on their phone and head towards home for delivery.

Last month, WalMart Stores said that it would offer shoppers a discount for 10,000 online orders only that are picked up by shoppers in store rather than delivered to their homes. The company also announced that it doubles down on its online business, where sales grew 63 percent in the first quarter of this year.

The move comes as Walmart looks to expand its online sales and compete with Amazon. The retail giant has also revamped its shipping program and offers free, two-day shipping for online orders for its most popular items with a minimum purchase of $35.
